At Least For Today (A Poem)

At least for today black has disappointed me.

Everything in it has come down a sham:

The Ace of Spades

The night sky

The iconography of a black leather jacket

Even facts right there in black and white.

At least for today white has let me down.

Everything in it is less than it might have been

Ice cream

Crisp white cotton shirts

Even the possibilities of a blank sheet.

At least for today, I’m with the real cowboys,

Not the idealists portrayed in the movies

At home with the dust and dirt of reality.
